ADMINISTRATIVE, ACADEMIC AND WELFARE ACTIVITIES
Governing Body
The governing Body of the college is the highest administrative body which provides the necessary guidelines for the smooth conduct of its administrative affairs. The Principal in his capacity as the head of the institution and secretary to the Governing Body, carries out the resolutions adopted at its meetings. The Governing Body, apart from other members, has proportional representation from the Teaching and the Non- Teaching staff of the college. It has also one representative from the Students’ Union. Thus even at the highest level of administration the college has a system of participative management.
Academic Sub- Committee
The Academic Sub- Committee, chaired by the Principal, consists of representatives from the Governing Body, Teaching and the Non- Teaching staff and students of college. It is primarily responsible foe all academic affairs in terms of setting norms for admission and promotion of students, conduct of class tests, Annual and Test Examinations. It also ensures the preparation of Time Table for the commencement of class in every academic session. The co-ordinator of the Sub- Committee the execution of the decisions taken of its meetings.
Finance Sub- Committee
The Finance management of the college is done according to the recommendations of the Finance Sub- Committee consisting of representatives from the Governing Body and other members nominated by G.B. The secretary of the Students’ Union is also one of its members. The Principal of the college is its chairman. No major expenditure for any purpose is made without the assent of Finance Sub- Committee.
Library Sub- Committee
The college has a Library Sub- Committee consisting of representatives from the Teaching and the Non- Teaching staff. It has one representative from the Students’ Union also. The Librarian of the college is the convener of this committee. The Library Sub-Committee, chaired by the Principal oversees the management of the college library and recommends measures for its enrichment both in terms of procurement of books as well as its functioning for the benefit of the students.
Internal quality Assurance Cell (I.Q.A.C)
The college has an Internal quality Assurance Cell constituted of representatives from the Governing Body ,Teaching and the Non- Teaching staff and one member from the Students’ Union to monitor and enhance continually the quality of performance in every department of administrative and academic activity. The objective of this cell is to ensure quality education to the students by encouraging student participation, adopting best practices and innovations for a comprehensive structural and functional growth of the institution.
NAAC Co-ordinating Body
The college has a special body to prepare it for a rigorous quality judgement process by National assessment and Accreditation Council, an autonomous institution of the University Grants Commission. This body, chaired by the Principal, consists of representatives from the Teaching and the Non- Teaching staff of the College. The Secretary of the Students’ in also one of its members.
Teachers’ Council
Teachers’ Council (T.C.) is the most important non-administrative body of the college. At the meetings of the council, presided over by the Principal and convened by the Secretary (elected by the Teachers) , all important academic matters are discussed, The members advise the Principal whenever he seeks their advice on any specific issue for the smooth functioning of the institution.
Students’ Union
All students of the college are members of the Students’ Union. The Union arranges for social services and relief work. It also renders financial and other help to the poor and deserving students of the college. There is a constitution of the Students’ Union which regulates the activities of the Union including its election and the formation of its Executive Committee.
Alumni Association
The college has a Alumni Association for keeping up a warm and creative relationship with its former students. The association organizes various philanthropic activities for the well being of the society. It also serves as an effective mechanism in having feedback on the progression of the former and outgoing students into different walk of life.
Percentage of Attendance
In order to be eligible for being sent up for University Examination a student must satisfy the university norms regarding attendance at lectures and practical classes as detailed as detailed below :
1. No student shall be considered to have pursued a regular course of study in any subject unless he/she attended at least 75% of the lectures delivered. Any student with percentage of attendance less than the stipulated norm shall not be allowed to appear for any examination. In no case shortage in attendance at practical classes will be condoned.
2. A condonation fee of Rs.100/- is charged by the university from each student in whose case the deficiency at attendance at lectures is within condonable limit.
Tutorial and Class Tests
Tutorial Classes are an integral part of the teaching – learning process of the college. These classes are arranged to provide an indepth understanding of the subjects taught through an intensive student teacher interaction. Class tests are regularly held on Honours and General subjects and the performance of the student in these tests is monitored closely.
Career Counselling
In recent times career counselling has emerged as a service of major importance to the student community. Accordingly the college has responded to this growing need by way of constituting a committee for disseminating career oriented information to the student. In the days to come this facility will be made more effective and accessible to the students by making use of the expertise of the professional in this field.
Seminars
Vidyasagar Evening College in order to sharpen the intellectual ability and critical acumen of its students, organizes seminars on different subjects and topics where students are encouraged to deliver lectures. Teachers of the college also participate as speakers in such in-house seminars. Apart from these erudite scholars from different academic disciplines are invited from time to time to speak on different contemporary issues.
Social Service
The college with the help of its students’ Union and other non-government organization takes up various social service programmes like organizing voluntary blood donation camp, health awareness and environmental pollution control drives etc. The college in collaboration with the Central Blood Bank encourages its students to donate blood at least once a year in a very planned way. Further arrangements are often made for Health Checkup of the college students so that they can avail themselves of the modern and specialized indoor and free outdoor treatment facilities in the students’ Health Home at a highly subsidized rate. Besides, health check-up camps are occasionally organized in the college.
N.S.S.
The college has recently opened an N.S.S. wing under the guidance of a committee consisting of experienced and trained teachers to inculcate the spirit of self-less community service into its students. The recent programmes taken up by it include health awareness camps in some slum areas of the city.
The N.S.S. Committee has plan to broaden and diversify its activities further in the years to come.
Sports and games
The college has always encouraged its students to organize and participate in sporting activities both inside and outside the college. The student union under the able guidance of a Sports committee comprising of teaching, non-teaching staff and students and headed by the Principal plays a pivotal role in organizing its sporting events.
An Annual sports, participated by the students as well as the teachers and the staff, is held with great enthusiasm. A common room tournament organized by the students’ Union where competitions in Carrom, Table Tennis , Chess etc. is also held every year. A day and night Cricket Match is organized every year between staffs and students of the college. In addition the college regularly participates in tournaments organized by Calcuttta University and other organizations. The performance of the football team, Cricket team and the swimming team has been quite commendable. The swimming team emerged as the champion in the inter-college swimming championship of Calcuttta University.The cricket team came third in the inter- college cricket tournament. The football team also lived upto its reputation last year.
Computer Facilities
The college has network of computer facilities for various academic and administrative work. At present these facilities are located in (i) College office (ii) Dept. of Physics (iii) Dept. of Chemistry (iv) Dept. of Mathematics (v) Dept. of Geography (vi) College Library. While making use of these facilities in the scheduled academic programmes of the college including teaching and research, they are also being utilised for building up and processing Library date base, for computerization of office work, and for offering orientation and satellite courses to willing students belonging to diverse academic disciplines. The college has internet facilities and possesses a homepage of its own (www.vec.ac.in) together with appropriate links providing access to information relating to all aspects of this institution.
Laboratory and Equipment
The college has well equipped laboratories for the Departments of physic, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany, Physiology, Mathematics and Geography. It has also adequate number of equipments like slide projector, Video Camera, LCD Projector and other audio-visual aids to make use of whenever necessary for the benefit of students.
College Magazine
The college magazine is brought out annually or sometimes biennially with the objective of nourishing and giving exposure and encouragement to the literary flair of the students. Students are invited to contribute their writings on literary, cultural, social, economics and academic interest for the magazine. The Editorial Board, in keeping with glorious tradition of the college, takes every care to maintain the standard of the publication.
Functions and Cultural Activities
The college observes the Independence Day, Founder’s Birth and Death Anniversaries every year. Annual Social function is also organized after the puja vacation. The college has an active cultural committee at whose guidance a number of cultural functions including Rabindra Jayanti, Barshabaran, Vijaya sanmelani etc. are held. The students, teachers and the staff members of the college are encouraged to participate in these functions. Apart from these the cultural committee prepares the students for the different cultural competitions in which they represent the college. The second position of the college at the inter-college cultural competition Bangla Sanskriti Mela 2009 is one of its recent achievements.
Students, Grievance Redressal Cell
The college has an effective system of recording complaints and grievances from individual student so that those are promptly addressed to and redressed in order to bring transparency into the functioning of the college.
Railway Concession
The college office provides service to make available Railway concession to a large number of students.
Students Cheap Store and Canteen
The college has a cheap store to make course related books available to the students at an affordable price. It has also a canteen where the students can unwind themselves between busy schedule of classes over a cup of tea with snacks at a discounted price. It is pleasant place for them to interact on issues close to their heart and mind. |
